Prof. Dr. Angelique E.A.M. Weel-Koenders

Mrs AEAM Weel-Koenders (MD, PhD, Msc) is Professor at the Erasmus University and Rheumatologist at the Maasstad Hospital Rotterdam, the Netherlands. She studied medicine at the Free University in Amsterdam and subsequently she conducted clinical research at the Erasmus MC that resulted in her thesis entitled “Genetic and Skeletal determinants of
osteoporosis’ (2001). She completed her rheumatology training in 2006 (ErasmusMC and Franciscus Hospital) and during her rheumatology training she conducted studies with special focus on treatment strategies of inflammatory arthritis (Rheumatoid arthritis, axial Spondyloarthritis and Psoriatic arthritis) leading to peer-reviewed publications. Besides clinical work she the head of the regional collaboration of four rheumatology centres (2010- 2018) and member of the medial board (2012-2020) of the Maasstad Hospital.
In 2016 she took the initiative to form the integrated practice network JOINT VALUE with the aim to create value over the whole patient journey of for patients with inflammatory arthritis. In 2018 she was a member of the ICHOM working group of inflammatory arthritis. Inflammatory arthritis patients are invited to fill in PROMs according to the ICHOM standard set since October 2018 at different time points before, during and after treatment. Since 2017, Maasstad Hospital has collaborated with regional general practitioners and national SANTEON hospitals on the implementation of VBHC principles. In 2020 JOINT VALUE got the VBHC collaboration prize (https://vbhcprize.com/joint-value/). Since January 2020 she is a Professor at the Erasmus School of Health Policy & Management (Section HTA) at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam. By accepting the chair “evidence based value creation inpatient care” she broadens and shares her knowledge and expertise, especially on patient
outcome in relation to integrated cost.
